Whiteman’s Green has a large recreation ground, home to the local football team, Cuckfield Cosmos, and neighbouring town Haywards Heath’s Rugby Team. The ground is also regularly used by kitesurfers due to the strong winds often present. A recent addition to this area is the Skate Park. Parking is limited, and at busy times, namely Saturday mornings, cars park along the main road. Calls for parking restrictions or car park expansion have been made by local residents of Mill Hall. A skate park is now in place on the green itself. The Ship Inn was a notable public house situated in Whiteman’s Green, and is the location of the Brook Street Rowing Club‘s annual dinner. However the Ship INN was closed in 2014 and is now a CO-OP Supermarket.

A thoroughly modernised coaching inn and staging post in the heart of Cuckfield, The Talbot offers all manner of opportunities throughout the day. Pictures and decorative exhibits by local artists are dotted around the place, and the bar keeps it local with Sussex ales alongside guests from further afield and a host of continental beers to go with light lunches, salads, sandwiches and pastries.
Formal meals are served in the first-floor restaurant – a high-ceilinged, angular room with clean surfaces, bare tables and a menu that mixes modern European ideas with a smattering of true-Brit standards. Starters of pan-fried chicken livers with green bean salad or crispy ham hock with creamy mustard lentils might give way to salmon, fennel and spinach Wellington, battered haddock and chips or char-grilled chicken breast in a sesame bun – plus desserts such as apple crumble.
The light, airy interior and eye-catching views over Borde Hill Garden makes for an elegant dining experience in this acclaimed local restaurant, where friendly staff serve contemporary dishes from a kitchen well attuned to the calendar.
‘Modern classics working with nature’ is the motto, and seasonality is everything when it comes to the regularly changing menu: expect starters of Selsey lobster with peach, radish and cucumber or slipcote cheese with heirloom tomato, peas and broad beans, ahead of wild sea bream and squid with seaweed potato, almond and samphire or rack and sweetbread of South Downs lamb with nasturtium gnocchi, leek and courgette.
For dessert, think sticky toffee pudding or an unusual pairing of angelica cheesecake with cucumber and granola. It’s also good to see a smattering of English wines on the well-spread list. “Always perfect” is a typically enthusiastic verdict that we endorse. Note: Café Elvira next door to the restaurant is run by Jeremey’s wife, Vera.
Côte is inspired by the brasseries of Paris, serving authentic French dishes all day in the classically designed restaurants. They are committed to producing authentic French classics, freshly cooked to order, from the highest quality sourced ingredients.
